This nest cam cycles through the previous hour's worth of pictures taken of blue-tits
nesting in a box in a garden in Charlbury, a Cotswold village in Oxfordshire.
A sad end to the story: 8 of the 10 eggs hatched on Thusday 10 May and the young were being fed by both parents during Thursday and
Friday. By Saturday 12 May, 5 were still alive but the female spent a lot of time keeping them warm
and the male was not seen very often bringing food. Several babies died during the evening and at
21.15, the female removed the bodies from the nestbowl and placed them on the nesting material at the side of
the box. At about 05.15 on Sunday 13 May, she left the box and kept returning periodically with food, but the last two babies in the
nestbowl were also dead. She picked up one of the bodies from the side in her beak and flew off with it.
At 07.00 she was still returning with food and then eating it herself, sitting and shuffling around in the nestbowl, then
flying off with more bodies from the side. The male also comes in with food. It takes them time to realise what has happened,
their instincts must be very strong. Maybe the problem was lack of
suitable food, maybe the parents were inexperienced. What we've seen here will probably be happening elsewhere,
so 2001 might turn out to be a poor breeding season for blue-tits and other birds feeding on similar food. See background
